Mirror a folder/files in Windows 7 using Sync Toy 2.1

Here is an awesome applications (Sync Toy 2.1) that mirrors your files to another folder on your pc with/without deleting the original files, if you will think of it what is the difference of this to cloud syncing tools out their like Dropbox, Sky Drive or Google Drive. Well basically all this cloud storage apps syncs all your files/folder that are only located on your cloud drive, ex. google drive folder and dropbox folder and anything you do on the original file will update on the folder you have set to sync, also it is has limited storage for FREE version so you need to organize which files to sync.

In my case I usually organize my files on my hard drive and I’m afraid to sync all my files over the cloud storage because it happened to me before that my friend that I shared my folder accidentally deleted the files/folder and that is the only copy I have and it was deleted forever because it was not on the history of the dropbox recovery files 🙁 and it was not notified that it was deleted. So because of that I needed to have a Mirror or backup file located on my drive or separate hard drive which is not only located on the cloud folders and I only want to sync a specific folder located on my drive. in Short I have a Mirror backup file and a cloud file which automatically sync , and I don’t need to drag the folders/files to the cloud folder just to sync that specific folders/files.

Sync Toy comes into place because it basically copy files located on your hardrive to a separate drive (it can be on another drive or cloud folders) and you can include/exclude which folder you only want to mirror and it makes your files more organized in which you want to have a copy on your cloud storage.

here is the quick step on how to use the application

first you need to donwload the software here you can choose a 32bit or a 64bit version which depends on what type of system are you using.

install and it and go to the process

they call it the left folder and right folder where you want to have a copy of your files and act as a mirror folder, in my case I have sync a separate folder going to my google drive folder

specify which action you want to apply
Synchronize — New and Updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes on either side are repeated on the other.
Echo — New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right
Contribute — New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. No deletetions.

and finally create a your folder pair name

this is the preview of the files that are currently sync and it shows all the details on what the process have done.

It also have a feature if you want to exclude or include specific folder/files

SyncToy 2.1 is a free application that synchronizes files and folders between locations. Typical uses include sharing files, such as photos, with other computers and creating backup copies of files and folders.

As a Designer I usually organize my files and folders to make my life easy when I want to look for the files that I have done before because on my experience unorganized file and not renaming your files to it’s proper naming convention will give you a huge headache in the future. I recommend to rename all your files base on the project name and have an order/version number (ex. 001, 002 and so on) so doing a mirror backup will save you so much time and help you organize more of your files and sync the files you only want to sync, on this workflow I sync only folders/files I want on my separate hardrive and point folders/files I only want to put on my dropbox and google drive or other cloud storage tools.
